Design in 2023 – what will hospitality interiors look like?

As part of our series of design in 2023, DesignLSM managing director Holly Hallam offers her view on what might happen in hospitality interiors over the next year.

What do you think 2023 will hold for hospitality interiors?

2023 is going to be an important year within the design space; 12 months that will undeniably set the tone for the next decade.

The mindset of consumers has undoubtedly changed as we see people becoming increasingly more driven by their own value systems. Addressing this, brands will be adopting a more authentic, personal approach, communicating their core ethics and beliefs through their marketing communications to connect with guests on an emotional level, which we will see translating through their interior design as well.

A conscious approach to designing spaces that enhance the guests’ physical and mental wellbeing is on the rise, igniting multi-sensory experiences that create memorable, healthy, and mindful moments. The role of interior designers continues to evolve, playing a part in generating a feeling of inner wellbeing for everyone who visits the spaces we design. Considerations will include maximising natural light, integrating biophilic design, specifying tactile finishes, or using colour psychology to emit positive emotions.

Borderless concepts will continue to evolve. Designing communities rather than individual spaces will be an important motivation. This means looking at the wider picture and ensuring these concepts speak and add to the locality while forming an authentic connection with, and playing an integral part of the geographic and social landscape through the use of a local supplier network. In the spaces created, community causes may be supported and people will be encouraged to gather, explore and socialise.

Given the climate crisis and environmental awareness increasing, hospitality brands and interior designers must be doing more when it comes to sustainability. With a vast array of sustainable innovations such as energy-saving devices, designers should also consider the specification of natural materials and sustainably made furniture, alongside the use of recycling and reupholstering.

Technology advancements will continue to shape the design landscape in 2023. Smart solutions will offer a number of cost saving and revenue opportunities, enabling brands to reach new levels of guest personalisation and profitability. Designed to provide an efficient and enhanced experience, integrations such a self-check-in systems, digital room keys, QR codes for ordering and paying, and branded apps are leading the charge. These are all important to consider within the interior design process as we look to understand how a space will be used and operated in order to create better engagement and an effective use of space.

What is your favourite hospitality interior design project from 2022 and why?

Australian-based Flack Studio created an elevated concept for the Ace Hotel in Sydney last year. It’s modern take on a classic industrial style has been complimented well by a warm colour palette and curated selection of materials, delivering a relaxed but high-end hotel space.
